What Is The Ombre Brow Tattoo?

Updated: Mar 14, 2021

If you’ve ever looked into getting eyebrow tattooing done, you may have gotten a little confused by all the different names for it.

Microblading… microshading… ombre… powder… Eh???

Before you book in for anything, it’s SUPER important to know what you’re in for. The different types of eyebrow tattooing suit different skin types and give very different results. Today we’re going to talk about 'Ombre'. The newest kid on the tattoo block and the style I specialise in.

What Are Ombre Brows?

‘Ombre’ brows refer to a particular technique of eyebrow tattooing. Using the finest tattoo needle, thousands of tiny dots are tattooed into the brow. After healing, the result is a soft powder finish. It literally looks like you’ve softly powdered your brows in. PERFECTLY.

Gaining in popularity all over the world, the name Ombre is now also used to describe the style of eyebrow tattoo. Lending from the hair technique of the same name, the Ombre brow tattoo can also mean fading from light to dark. Which means the colour is darker and defined in the brow tail and fades to very soft and light through the front of the brow. This creates a really natural look and suits those who have a good amount of brow hair already, but just want more definition.

Are Powder Brows The Same Thing?

To make things less confusing for everyone, I call the Ombre technique I specialise in the Soft Powder Brow. As the technique heals to a soft powdery finish, I thought it made more sense. :)

While the Soft Powder Brow IS technically the Ombre technique, I tailor it to each individual. If you don’t have much eyebrow hair then you’re going to want full, soft colour throughout your whole brow so that it looks like you have a full eyebrow. If you have a good amount of eyebrow hair then you may want just some colour in your brow tails to define your shape, which is an Ombre look.

The Soft Powder Brow tattoo can accommodate either.

Ombre Brows Are A Technique AND A Style

So Ombre can refer to the look of the tattoo (light to dark) but also the technique (lots of tiny dots).

It’s important to understand the difference between techniques so you know what result to expect and also because some don’t work for everyone. Microblading doesn’t work on oily skin for example.

The Ombre or Soft Powder tattoo works on ALL skin types. In your consultation for your eyebrow tattoo you can discuss exactly what look you're after and what will best suit your natural eyebrows.
