So I recently had an update to my little old android phone and my TWO favourite emojis have disappeared. I know. Sad face. You know the girl with her hands up in the air? She is my ‘Yaaayyyy!’ emoji. And the face with the half turned down mouth is my ‘Oh dear!’ sentiment in emoji form.
GONE.
What was even worse? That I was actually at a bit of a loss for words on how to express myself in texts. That is a sad state of affairs people. I swear I used to have a vocabulary.
Hiding Behind The Nonsense
This concern was echoed in a recent encounter I had with my hairdresser who is a lovely gentleman from Italy. His first language is not English and I was trying to describe to him what I wanted from my haircut. I remember looking at his face which was basically a blank, quizzical expression.
‘Oh wow.’ I thought. ‘He is not understanding me at all and it has nothing to do with English not being his first language. It’s ME!!! I’m using nonsense words like yaaaaasssss or ridunculous to describe things! What am I doing???’
Why do I use made up words? Especially when trying to communicate something as important as what I would like someone to do for me?! That should be made as CLEAR as possible. And it got me thinking… Why do I use silly words or try to change the meaning of words when I speak to people? Is it because I want to feel more interesting? Do I want to seem different and unique in how I communicate with people because of some underlying insecurity?
Look… probably.
just be clear
And rather than get all hung up about it, the good thing is that at least I became aware of it. Awareness of the possible reasons behind your actions is key. Not to judge yourself about those reasons, but just to become aware of them. You can then make a different choice in the future that may lead to a better outcome. Like expressing yourself clearly so you can get a really good haircut. :)
