Why eyebrows matter

Updated: Mar 14, 2021

‘Eyebrows on FLEEK!’ has never been said about my non-existent brows. I’ve tried just about every brow product ever created in the hopes of having great eyebrows. That is, until I was introduced to the life saving world of cosmetic tattooing, but more about that later...

In 2011, an MIT study asked participants to identify 50 famous faces. Participants were shown a series of photographs showing the faces with both eyes and eyebrows, without eyes and without eyebrows. According to the results, the famous faces were correctly identified without eyes 60% of the time, yet without eyebrows only 46% of the time. This suggests eyebrows are critical in facial recognition and even more important than eyes.

Eyebrows matter.

eyebrows have always mattered

Eyebrows MATTER. But why do they matter so much? Since when did two lines of hair on your forehead become such a big deal???

Since… always. Ancient Egyptians were all about the brows, using kohl to line eyes & add thickness & definition to eyebrows. Move over Cara Delevigne, the Egyptians were the first to sport the power brow. In Ancient Japan it was quite the thing to shave off your eyebrows completely, then carefully paint them on. There was even a trend of marking the forehead with symmetrical thumb-prints, called ‘smudge’ brows. The different coloured brow trend has even been a thing before. During the Tang Dynasty in Ancient China, women in the court of Emperor Wu were encouraged to paint their eyebrows qingdai; a beautiful shade of blue-green.

Smudge brows

don't do brow trends, do you

Eyebrows have seen it all, from thick to thin to shaved to painted. The bold, bushy brow is currently the brow of choice, so tweezers have been banished to the cupboard. However as history shows, trends change. That’s why it’s important not to stick to trends too closely, as women whose eyebrows have never grown back after vigorous plucking in the nineties will tell you. Your brows should be created for your unique face shape and have the look that you prefer. That’s what I love about the Soft Powder Brow tattoo technique. Brows can be created to suit the person, not the trend. And it doesn’t matter whether you have patchy brows, uneven brows or no brows to speak of, the perfect shape can be created for you.

I now get to wake up everyday with perfect brows! I know how life changing cosmetic eyebrow tattooing can be, which is why I now specialise in it. Find out all about the Soft Powder brow tattoo here.
